Crystal Castles, Canada’s sensational electronic artists are bringing their signature sounds to the Newport Music Hall!
The band was formed in 2006 in Toronto by songwriter/producer Ethan Kath and songwriter/vocalist Alice Glass. While their musical style can be broadly classified as electronic, it’s best described as a blend of electro punk (a fusion genre – created in the late 70s to mid 80s by punk musicians who swapped their guitars with synthesizers - that combines elements of electronic rock with punk music), synth pop (a subgenre of new wave music that rose to prominence in the late 1970s and features the synthesizer as the dominant musical instrument), and witch house (an occult-themed dark electronic music genre and visual aesthetic that emerged in the early 2010s, heavily influenced by chopped and screwed hip hop soundscapes, industrial and noise experimentation, and features use of synthesizers, drum machines, obscure samples, droning repetition and heavily altered, ethereal, indiscernible vocals). The band currently consists of Ethan (instruments, songwriting, production, and vocals), Edith Frances (vocals), and Christopher Chartrand (drums). They’ve had a stellar career with 4 studio albums, 15 singles, 14 music videos, and they’ve performed at many major festivals including Coachella, Reading and Leeds, and Glastonbury. They’ve won a John Peel Award for Innovation at the 2011 NME Awards.
