Gojira, France’s sensational heavy metal artists are bringing their electrifying sounds to the Newport Music Hall!

The band was formed in Ondres (France) in 1996 by brothers Joe (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and Mario Duplantier (drums, percussion), Christian Andreu (lead guitar), and bassist Alexandre Cornillon (later replaced by Jean-Michel Labadie). They first called themselves Godzilla but subsequent legal issues forced them to change it to their current moniker which is the rōmaji spelling of the fictional monster Godzilla. They cite heavy metal acts such as Slayer, Sepultura, Death, Morbid Angel, Meshuggah, Tool, Metallica, Pantera, and Neurosis as their key influences and their sound has evolved to become a blend of death, thrash, groove, progressive, and math metal. They use a technical and rhythmic style of play consisting of blast beats, unusual rhythm patterns, and start-and-stop riffs, all combined with a varied vocal style ranging from screams and growls often heard in extreme and death meal to clean vocals. This creates an aggressive but melodic effect to which they add lyrics about life, death, spirituality, meditation, the human body, and nature as one interconnected entity. They’ve had a stellar career with 6 studio albums, 3 live DVDs, and they’re also environmentalists who cooperate with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to protect dolphins, whales, and sharks.

Don’t miss your chance to see these artists and their unpredictable blend of death, thrash, groove, progressive, and math metal!
