Reel Big Fish was formed in Huntington Beach in 1991 by vocalist Ben Guzman, keyboardist Zach Gilltrap, guitarist Lisa Smith, bassist Matt Wong, and drummer Andrew Gonzales. The band’s been through many line up changes since then and it currently consists of Aaron Barrett (lead vocals, keys/synthesizers, and guitar), John Christianson a.k.a. Johnny Christmas (trumpet and backing vocals), Derek Gibbs (bass and backing vocals), Matt Appleton a.k.a. Saxl Rose (saxophone and vocals), Billy Kottage (trombone and backing vocals), and Edward Larsen (drums and backing vocals). Their musical style spans the genres of ska punk (a fusion music genre that combines ska music and punk rock music), alternative rock, and third wave ska (characterized by dominating guitar riffs and large horn sections). They’ve had a stellar career with 7 studio albums, 1 live album, 3 compilation albums, 3 video albums, 3 extended plays, 3 demo tapes, and 2 seven inch vinyl records. They’re also renowned for their covers of songs by artists such as A-ha, The Cure, Propagandhi, Sublime, Frank Sinatra, The Police, Tracy Chapman, Social Distortion, The Smiths, The Stray Cats, Phil Collins, Poison, John Mellencamp, Van Morrison, The Eagles, Tom Petty, and many others.
