The Mountain Goats, sensational indie rock artists are bringing their signature sounds to the Newport Music Hall!
The Mountain Goats started off in Claremont (California) in 1991 as a solo project of singer and songwriter John Darnielle. Over the years, he's collaborated with a rotating cast of musicians and at present, the project's line up consists of John (vocals, guitar, and keyboard), Peter Hughes (bass and backing vocals), Jon Wurster (drums), and Matt Douglas (flute, saxophone, clarinet, guitar, keyboard, and backing vocals). Their musical style is best described as a blend of indie rock (a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United States and the United Kingdom in the 1980s, encapsulating the genres chamber pop, indie pop, lo fi, math rock, neo psychedelia, post punk revival, sadcore, and shoegaze) and lo fi (a genre which grew primarily from American underground music scenes in the early 1980s and is associated with artists such as Sebadoh, Pavement, Liz Phair, and Beck). They’ve had a stellar career with 16 studio albums, 4 compilation albums, 23 extended plays, 4 demo tapes, 6 cassette-only releases, and they've collaborated with many renowned artists such as Simon Joyner, Alastair Galbraith, Furniture Huschle, John Vanderslice, and Kaki King. Their music has also been featured on the Showtime television series, Weeds.
